Students participate in many hands on investigations and experiments throughout our unit on soil. We look at a number of different soils including topsoil, sandy-soil, sand, gravel, and clay. As a class we discover the different properties of each type of soil, noting which ones are suitable for plant life. Once our students are experts on the different types of soil, we investigate the soil right from children's own backyards! Through observations and data collection, students can determine what soil is made up of and which soil samples they bring in are best to support plant life and why.
Learning Standards:
Explain and give examples of the ways in which soil is formed (the weathering of rock by water and wind and from the decomposition of plant and animal remains).
Recognize and discuss the different properties of soil, including color, texture (size of particles), the ability to retain water, and the ability to support the growth of plants.
