October - Early November
The Realistic Fiction reading unit provides students with an opportunity study characters. In doing so, they learn how to make detailed observations, and ultimately develop character theories through reading a number of realistic fiction texts.
We model how to examine characters and how to get to the “heart” of what they're thinking and feeling, by reading aloud There's a Boy in the Girls Bathroom. The students then have the opportunity to practice these skills independently, as well as through “partnerships,” while reading a book of their choice by Andrew Clements.
