January - Mid February
Students spend this time of year working hard at developing their informational pieces. They learn and apply skills such as creating a plan using detailed "boxes and bullets," adding research to be able to further teach their audience, and how to incorporate a variety of nonfiction texts features into their various sub sections (chapters).
The students also practice making their writing clear and precise with the inclusion of topic sentences, specific details, and concluding sentences. Furthermore, they learn how to revise for more sophisticated language in their pieces as they begin to develop a broader "transition words" vocabulary.
